The journey of influence and impact

In my quest for shaping lives and leading changes do I think of myself as an Influencer?   I pause to reflect on this question. Every single time, I answer it with a simple “I think it depends on the criteria using to measure influence and impact.”  Every era, certain individuals rise above the crowd—not because of wealth or celebrity, but because of the lasting influence and positive impact they have on those around them. To be a person of influence and impact is to leave an indelible mark on people, organizations, and communities, transforming the world in subtle yet profound ways. This aspiration is not reserved for the privileged few; rather, it is attainable by anyone willing to cultivate the right mindset, habits, and heart. A recent conversation with a respected former colleague emphasized this point when he said, “I knew when I met you that you were someone that I would want to get to know, and I am so grateful how our paths have intersected.”   In this article, I want to explore the essence of influence, the pathways to meaningful impact, and actionable steps that help us become a catalyst for change.

Influence is often misunderstood as mere persuasion or authority. Our world today creates an illusion that an “influencer” is an occupation that creates wealth for someone that is gifted in persuasion and the ability to “sell” an item or idea.  In truth, it is the ability to inspire thought, shape emotions, and guide actions. Influence is not coercion, but a magnetic force born from authenticity, charisma, wisdom, passion and compassion. Impact, on the other hand, is the tangible and intangible evidence of influence—visible in changed lives, improved systems, and a legacy of goodwill.

To become a person of influence and impact, one must strive for a balance of intellect, empathy, vision and humility. Such individuals do not simply change circumstances; they elevate and inspire those around them.

As I explored the research on how to be influential, I discovered that first you must know yourself. Authenticity is your foundation—it is acting in harmony with your values and beliefs. When people sense that your words and actions align, their trust in you grows. Authentic leaders are transparent about their strengths and weaknesses, and they embrace vulnerability as a bridge to connection.

Influence flourishes where relationships thrive. Again, I struggled with understanding how the difference between the “influencer” and a person of influence intersects.  The realization is that lasting influence takes time.  It is time to genuinely listen to others, understand their perspectives, and invest in their growth. Empathy deepens connections and earns loyalty—critical ingredients for lasting influence.  Influence requires active listening: Focus on understanding, not just responding. Asking thoughtful questions and show genuine interest.  Influence includes celebrating others: Recognizing achievements and expressing gratitude. Simple gestures create ripples that inspire loyalty and collaboration.

Great influencers are often exceptional communicators. They articulate visions, share stories, and spark imagination. Clarity removes ambiguity, while purpose gives direction.  As I journey on in my discovery of influence, I have learned that people of influence have a way of telling their story. By sharing their personal experiences and lessons. Stories are memorable, build credible trust and can move people to action more powerfully than raw data.  What we like or want to share is not always what our audience’s needs or values.  It is important to communicate in a way that resonates and motivates.

Actions speak louder than words. Demonstrate the behavior you wish to see in others—whether it be honesty, diligence, or compassion. When you embody your values, you create a living model for others to follow.  This requires consistency and upholding your principles even when no one is watching.  I take great pleasure in admitting my mistakes (or learning trials) and sharing how I self-corrected. This type of humility has often strengthened trust through sharing vulnerabilities.

Moving on from influence toward impact often occurs naturally.  However, Impact is magnified through service.  By finding ways to uplift others, whether through mentorship, volunteering, or simply offering help in times of need. Service transforms influence from self-serving to world-serving.  I have mentored many future leaders and established leaders throughout my career by simply sharing my knowledge with those who seek guidance.  While supporting these individuals, I have often learned more about myself and the areas or issues I am passionate about and willing to dedicate time or resources to address them.  Of course, during these periods of influence and impact, it is not unusual to encounter setbacks and adversity.  What sets a true influencer apart is their ability to persist, adapt, and inspire others through challenges. These situations cultivate resilience by reframing failures as learning opportunities and maintaining hope.  Enduring setbacks it allows us to reflect on whether we are seeking recognition over substance, manipulating rather than inspiring, or simply neglecting self-care prohibiting us from being our best self.

If you are like me and on a continuous life journey of being an influencer of impact it requires intentionality, courage, and compassion. It is shaped not by position or resources, but by the small, daily choices to serve, learn, uplift, and inspire. As you cultivate authenticity, build deep relationships, and seek opportunities to create positive change, you will find your influence expanding and your impact deepening—one person, one moment, and one act at a time.

Let your life be your message. In the end, the true measure of influence is not how many follow you, but how many are empowered to lead because of you.
